Development of Survey Needs Analysis Instruments for Mother Tongue Based Multilingual Education Programme

 

To obtain more valuable data to facilitate the development of Mother Tongue Based Multilingual Education (MTB MLE) programme in Indonesia, SEAMEO QITEP in Language (the Centre) is planning to conduct needs analysis survey in West Nusa Tenggara and South Sulawesi in 2016. Thus, to provide models of instruments for the survey, the Centre held the workshop on 29 June-3 July 2015 at Best Western Premier Hotel – The Hive, Jakarta.

The workshop was attended by education practitioners from West Nusa Tenggara and South Sulawesi. In addition, the Centre’s research team for the MTB MLE were also present.

To lead and assist the participants during the workshop, the Centre invited 6 resource persons. They are Dr Felicia Nuradi Utorodewo from SEAMEO QITEP in Language, Ms Alice Eastwood from Summer Institute of Linguistics (SIL) International Indonesia, Dr Johny Tjia from Sulinama Foundation, Prof Dr Suwardi Endraswara from Yogyakarta State University, Dr Dingding Haerudin from Indonesian Education University as well as Mr Husni Mu’adz PhD from Mataram University.

In the workshop, the participants were divided into four groups. Each group discussed and revised the survey instruments used in West Java and Yogyakarta in 2013. Then, they presented the survey instruments to the resource persons to get feedback on their works.

By the end of the workshop, the participants were able to produce draft of guidebook and survey instruments for different groups of respondents, namely local education officials, school supervisors, school principals, heads of villages, teachers, students, and parents.
