School Action Research: A Tool for Problem Solving at School

Based on research result from the Ministry of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia, the level of school principals’ competence in Indonesia is still low. This fact motivated SEAMEO QITEP in Language (Centre) to create a workshop on School Action Research. This workshop were aimed to improve school principals’ competence in the concept of school action research and to make a proposal of school action research.

A total of 22 principals of senior high schools, vocational high school, and Madrasah Aliya from 11 provinces in Indonesia (Aceh, North Sumatera, West Sumatera, South Sumatera, DKI Jakarta, West Java, Central Java, East Java, West Kalimantan, North Sulawesi, and South Sulawesi) actively took part in this workshop.

On this occasion, the Centre invited three resource persons to share their knowledge in the field of school action research. They were Mr Handoyo Puji Widodo, PhD (Independent Researcher), Dr R. Eko Djuniarto (PPPPTK Bahasa), and Dr Nur Arifah Drajati (SMA Labschool Rawamangun). They collaborated to present some materials and also guided the participants to compose proposals of school action research. Most of them focused in developing teachers’ teaching competence.

At the end of the workshop, each participant produced a proposal for school action research. The 22 proposals will be selected, and the 10 selected ones will receive research grant from the Centre. The research result, then, will be presented on AISOFOLL (Annual International Symposium of Foreign Language Learning) conducted by the Centre in 2017.
