WORKSHOP ON CREATING GREEN SCHOOLS

SEAMEO QITEP in Language organised Workshop on Creating Green Schools on 21 December 2015 in Centre of Development and Empowerment for Language Teachers and Education Personnel (CDELTEP), South Jakarta. The workshop aimed to (1) introduce environmental management by cultivating waste into compost, (2) introduce hydroponic plants as teaching aid to the school and the community and (3) enhance awareness toward green environment.

The resource persons of the workshop were Ms Indrani Dewi Anggraini from SEAMEO QITEP in Language, Dr Arief Sabdo Yuwono from SEAMEO BIOTROP, and the teaching team from SMKN 63 Jakarta, namely Mr Ramli, Mr Ery Suristono, Mr M Sodik Yunadi and Ms Rukijati Widjianingsih. In addition, there were 106 people participating in the workshop comprising of teachers (from early childhood to senior high school), government staff, and community around the Centre as well as public.

During the workshop, the participants learnt the concept to utilize the organic waste as compost material, hydroponic plants, systems and nutrients. The participants were grouped into 10 in which each group was guided by a student from SMKN 63 Jakarta. They practiced to plant greenery in plastic bottles as one type of hydroponic system. They were also taught how to take care of the plants as they were allowed to bring their results home.
