Workshop on Language Competence Assessment

In Collaboration with Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, & Technology (MEXT) Japan, SEAMEO QITEP in Language (Centre) conducted Workshop on Language Competence Assessment. The workshop was successfully held on February 23-25, 2016 at WS Rendra Meeting Room, PPPPTK Bahasa, Jakarta. The aim of the workshop was to improve foreign language teachers’ competence on developing language competence assessment instruments.

Associate Professor Dr Chantal Hemmi from Center for Language Education and Research, Sophia University Japan and Sri Sulastini from Jakarta State University were invited as resource persons at this 3-day workshop. They focused on the use of non-test instrument in measuring students’ language competence. Besides, they also gave explanation about the using of “Can Do statements” concept in Common European Framework of Reference for language (CEFR).  The “Can Do statements” really helpful to assist teachers describing learning aims and developing non-test instruments.

A total of 54 participants from various schools and language institutions in Jakarta, Depok, Bogor, and Yogyakarta took part in this workshop. During the workshop, they worked in a group from the similar language background. They made posters to implement knowledge shared by the resource persons. The posters comprised learning aims, can do statements, tasks, and non-test instruments using particular learning materials. Afterwards, each group was requested to present their work to others and resource persons. After the presentation session, the workshop continued with discussion and reflection. In this session, both resource persons and participants gave inputs according to the previous presentation.

At the last day, some participants delivered few words about the workshop. Ms Dumondom Rajagukguk from 74 Senior High School Jakarta felt thankful for the chance given to her and her fellow teachers to participate in the workshop. Some participants were enthusiastic in expressing their willingness to apply the concept and examples from the workshop with their students. Others said that the workshop reopened their minds on the importance of assessing students’ real language competence and learning instruction on how to get Zolpidem online All in all, the participants found that the resource persons were inspiring and gave them motivation to take into account on students’ interests.

The workshop was officially closed by Dr Felicia N. Utorodewo, Director of SEAMEO QITEP in Language.
