Training on Development of Teacher’s Competence in Mother Tongue

 

With regards to the results of needs analysis survey on the Development of the Mother Tongue-based  Multi Lingual Education programme executed in Yogyakarta and Bandung in 2013, there was one particular issue confronted by one group of respondents i.e. primary school teachers. As teachers of grade 1 to 3, they felt that they need improvement on Sundanese language skills especially as a medium of instruction so they could assist students to comprehend learning materials. Accordingly, the Centre organised the Training on Development of Teacher’s Competency in Mother Tongue on 11-16 April 2016 at Gumilang Regency Hotel, Bandung, as the follow-up action to the survey’s result.

The Centre invited four experts to support the activity, they were: Dr. H. Juhana M, M.Pd. (the Head of Education and Culture Department of Bandung Regency), Dr. H. Dingding Haerudin, M.Pd. (Lecturer from the Sundanese Language Department of the Indonesia University of Education), Dr. H. Usep Kuswari, M.Pd. (Lecturer from the Sundanese Language Department of the Indonesia University of Education) and Dra. Indrani Dewi Anggraini, M.Hum. (Deputy Director of Administration of SEAMEO QITEP in Language). Twenty primary teachers of grade 1 to 3 were the training participants. Most of them came from districts of Bandung Regency, i.e., Mekarjaya Village, Sukamanah, Ciwidey, Warga Mekar, Panyirapan Village, Sadu Village, Bojongmanggu Village,  and Cangkuang.

Picture 2. Dr. Juhana M. M.Pd. (the Head of Education and Culture Department of Bandung Regency) is delivering one of the training subjects entitled Policy on the Use of the Local Language to be the Language of Instruction in Primary Schools Level made by the State Government of Bandung Regency.

This 5-day training developed and drilled the participant’s skills as well as competencies in mastering the Sundanese language and gaining more knowledge pertained to the Sundanese culture in society. During the activity, participants were taught a variety of training subjects, namely: the Guidelines of the Mother Tongue Programme (achieved results, training purpose, etc), a short presentation on the Policy on the Use of the Local Language to be the Language of Instruction in Primary Schools Level made by the State Government of Bandung Regency, Competency in Oral Language (Listening and Speaking), Competency in Written Language (Reading and Writing), Designing Teaching Materials Written in Sundanese Language, and use them in teaching simulation session. At the end of the training, there were four Sundanese teaching materials covered and made by the training participants, i.e., my neighborhood, my family, body parts, and events. These teaching materials were meant for students of primary schools in grade 1 to 3.

The participants expected that more similar programmes could be organised for other teachers in different regencies of West Java so that their mother tongue competency level is sufficient to teach the students of grade 1 to 3.
