The 8th Governing Board Meeting: A Collaboration towards Unification

Seven Governing Board Members for Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Myanmar, Singapore and Vietnam, as well as two representatives of Governing Board Members for Malaysia and Thailand attended the Centre’s 8th Governing Board Meeting (GBM). The meeting was held at Sheraton Mustika Resort and Spa, Special Region of Yogyakarta on the 2nd-6th October 2017.

The meeting was opened by the representative of SEAMEO Secretariat, Dr Pattama Punthawangkul. In her remarks, she congratulated the Centre for its achievements over the past years. Furthermore, she also showed her gratitude to the Government of Indonesia and all SEAMEO Member Countries for their support to the Centre’s sustainability.

During the meeting, the Centre reported its programmes and activities conducted in FY 2016/2017. Furthermore, the meeting also endorsed the proposed initiative programme of the development of HOTS-based literacy competence through language teaching which is going to be developed for FY 2017/2018-2018/2019.

Aside from the discussion on the working papers, each Governing Board Member also presented the latest trends on language education in their respected countries. This session was conducted based on the agreement from the 7th GBM held in 2016. All present at the current GBM agreed to conduct the similar activity in the next GBM and consequently they came up with some topics to be discussed.

The Centre Director, Dr Bambang Indriyanto, stated in his closing remarks that the meeting was considered as a policy dialogue between the Governing Board Members and the Centre. This policy dialogue is a basis for the Centre to plan and implement its future programmes. Regarding the implementation of the Centre programmes, Dr Bambang Indriyanto expected the Governing Board Members to collaborate with the Centre and to work together in strengthening Southeast Asian countries using their own specialties.

On the last day of the GBM, the Governing Board Members as well as the Centre Deputies and staff visited SMA Negeri 3 Yogyakarta and SMK Negeri 1 Kasihan Bantul (SMKI Yogyakarta). During the visit in SMA Negeri 3 Yogyakarta, the Governing Board Members learned not only about the school programmes, but also observed the school facilities, such as science laboratory, classroom and multimedia room. In SMK Negeri 1 Kasihan Bantul, the Governing Board Members were presented four beautiful performances from group of students of the four majors in the school, namely Karawitan (Gamelan musical art), Dance, Pedalangan (Art of directing Wayang) and Theatre. After that, the group visited the world’s largest Buddhist temple, Borobudur Temple and went to the famous Malioboro Street, the busiest shopping site in DI Yogyakarta.
