A good and professional teacher is the one who keeps expanding knowledge and improving skills through Continous Professional Development (CPD). One form of CPD is by performing Class Action Research (CAR) to evaluate teaching-learning process and to find the effective way to improve students’ learning. However, most teachers, especially in Indonesia, experience some difficulties to perform CAR; they feel no confidence because of the lack of knowledge.

SEAMEO QITEP in Language (the centre), in line with one of SEAMEO seven priority areas (revitalizing teacher education), conducted Training on Research Methodology for Language Teaching in LPMP, Yogyakarta on 6-12 November 2017 to improve teachers’ understanding about CAR and ways to perform the research. A total of 39 language teachers that consisted of Arabic, English, French, German, Indonesia, Japanese and Mandarin participated in this programme.

Guided by the resource persons from the Centre, Dr Bambang Indriyanto, Ms Endang Nilla Pramowardhanny and Ms Hasanatul Hamidah, the participants wrote the research proposal based on their own classroom problems. During the training, the participants identified and formulated the research question. After they wrote a literature review related to the research question, they determined the action alternative to be applied in the research. The participants also learned how to apply data collection technique, analyse and interpret the data.

During the process of writing the proposal, the participants had difficulties in determining the action plan, using the data collection and analysing the data. Nevertheless, at the end of the training, the participants succeed to write their own proposal. In the last session, every participant presented the research proposal and received feedbacks and suggestions from the resource persons. In the presentation, various research methods were proposed to be applied to improve several language competences.

Below are some pictures showing the activities during the training.
