Incorporating Literacy in Early Childhood Education

To enhance the competence of Early Childhood Education (ECE) teachers in developing literacy for children in the early age during learning process as well as literacy environment at schools, the Centre held Workshop on Literacy Development of Early Childhood Education on 14–15 November 2017 at PPPPTK Bahasa building, Jakarta.

Sixty-four ECE teachers from DKI Jakarta province attended the workshop. They acquired knowledge on all matters related to early literacy development.

Prior to learning session, Mr Yudi Komarudin (Direktorat Jenderal Guru dan Tenaga Kependidikan—Directorate General of Teachers and Education Personnel, MoEC, Jakarta) elucidated Policy of Directorate Development of Teachers and Education Personnel for Early Childhood and Community Education. The participants also obtained information related to the Policy of SEAMEO QITEP in Language.

Ms Mareta Wahyuni (Direktorat Pembinaan Anak Usia Dini, Ditjen PAUD dan DIKMAS—Directorate of Early Childhood Development, Directorate General of Early Childhood Education Non formal and Informal (PAUDNI) and Community Education, MoEC, Jakarta), Dr Nurbiana Dhieni (Universitas Negeri Jakarta—Jakarta State University, Jakarta ) and Ms Emilia Nazir (Indonesian Section of International Board on Books for Young People, Jakarta) broadened the participants’ knowledge on early childhood development, concept of early literacy development and learning strategies of early literacy skills.

The resource persons did not only present theories but also engaged the participants in different kinds of games such as guessing sound and telling stories. Through the games, the participants learnt various meaningful activities that stimulate literacy for ECE students. By the end of the workshop, the participants prepared nine action plans (in form of lesson plans) which incorporated literacy in learning process.

Upon participating in the workshop, the participants stated that they were satisfied with the workshop content, workshop design and the resource persons.
