Improving Language Teachers’ Competence on HOTS-based Learning Models

In order to support the policy of Ministry of Education and Cultural of the Republic of Indonesia, particularly the improvement of quality education through continuous professional development programme, SEAMEO QITEP in Language organised Training on HOTS-based Language Teaching Methodology on 3-7 December 2018 in LPMP DKI Jakarta. In November, similar training was held parallelly in Jakarta and Pontianak.

This training aimed to enhance the language teachers’ competence in language teaching methodology using HOTS-based learning models. The training was officially opened by Dr Sumharmoko, Deputy Director for Administration of SEAQIL. Nineteen language teachers from Jakarta with various language backgrounds (Arabic, English, German, Indonesian, Japanese, and Mandarin) participated in the training. During the training, the resource persons presented three HOTS-based learning models, namely text-based learning, project-based learning and discovery learning. The participants, in group, was guided by the resource persons to develop lesson plan based on their language specialties. By the end of the training, the participants simulate their lesson plan. Upon simulating the lesson plans, they received input as well as feedback from the resource persons and fellow participants.

All in all, it was a fruitful training for the participants to develop their own lesson plans for language teaching in the classroom.
